The Cathedral of Novara di Sicilia

A place full of history to discover together

The Cathedral of Novara di Sicilia, dedicated to Saint Mary of the Assumption, is located in the heart of the village and is one of the most important places to visit during a family day out.

The church we see today dates back to the 15th century and was built on the same site where the original church once stood. Over the centuries, it has been enriched with decorations and renovations, gradually taking on its current appearance. After World War II, the Cathedral was restored, preserving its charm and historical value.

The bell tower, solid and imposing, was built in the 18th century and still holds its bells, which have long been part of the life of the village.

What to see inside

As you enter the Cathedral, you are welcomed into a spacious and harmonious interior, divided into three naves by elegant columns. The marble altars and architectural details tell the story of the care and craftsmanship that shaped this place over time.

Beneath the church, there is also a crypt — a unique and evocative space that preserves traces of the village’s past.

Inside, you’ll find several artworks that can also capture children’s curiosity, turning the visit into a moment of discovery:

  • historic paintings depicting religious scenes
  • a beautiful wooden statue of the Virgin Mary
  • a finely carved wooden choir

In the sacristy, ancient furnishings and artworks from different periods are preserved, each with its own story.

The Cathedral Treasure

One of the most fascinating aspects is the so-called “Cathedral Treasure”: a collection of precious and historical objects, including silver items, sacred vestments, and a unique terracotta vase linked to the tradition of Saint Ugo.

These elements tell stories from the past and make the visit even more engaging, especially for children, sparking curiosity and imagination.

Why visit it with your family

Visiting the Cathedral of Novara di Sicilia is a simple yet meaningful experience, perfect to enjoy with your children.

It is not just a church, but a place where history, art, and traditions come together. Here you can slow down, observe details, share stories, and enjoy a different kind of moment as a family.

Combining this visit with time spent outdoors makes the experience even more complete — a perfect balance between discovery, movement, and quality time together.
